Licensing Technology

چکیده
Software piracy and licensing are becoming increasingly important in the Software industry. With the advent of computer networks and the explosion in the number of computer users, new concepts in licensing have come forth. In this report, we study the various licensing solutions possible in a networked environment under different requirements and constraints. We then take a look at some existing solutions. Finally, we present the design and implementation of two solutions – a peer-to-peer based mechanism , and a hybrid central server based mechanism.

On Relationships between Technology Standards and Patented Technology Licensing
There exist the close relationships between technology standards and patented technology licensing. Whether a technology standard contains a specific patented technology solution or not, there is always a patented technology licensing implied: patented technology licensing is a prerequisite for the existence and development of technology standards, and technology standards create a good many of...
متن کاملDecision Making on Strategic Environmental Technology Licensing: Fixed-Fee versus Royalty Licensing Methods
Because of a deterioration in the quality of the environment, this paper studies the effects of the environment and the economy on environmental technology licensing in a homogeneous Cournot duopoly model in order to reduce environmental pollution and hence improve social welfare. To this end, two licensing methods — namely, a fixed-fee licensing method and a royalty licensing method — are comp...
متن کاملStrategic Pricing of Technology License under Product Differentiation
This paper studies factors that might affect the price (i.e. a fixed licensing fee) and the demand for technology licensing. The author finds that the licensor’s licensing fee is found to increase in the degree of product differentiation between technology holders, the degree of knowledge inappropriability, and the level of transaction costs of technology licensing. Also, product differentiatio...
متن کاملThe Halo Effect and Technology Licensing: The Influence of Institutional Prestige on the Licensing of University Inventions
Sociologists and organizational theorists have long claimed that the processes of knowledge creation and distribution are fundamentally social. Following in this tradition, we explore the effect of institutional prestige on university technology licensing. Empirically, we examine the influence of university prestige on the annual rate of technology licensing by 102 universities from 1991 to 199...
متن کاملAn NTU Game Approach to Patent Licensing: Stable Bargaining Outcomes under Two Licensing Policies
By formulating negotiations about licensing payments as cooperative games without side payments, we investigate stable bargaining outcomes in licensing a cost-reducing technology of an external patent holder to oligopolistic firms producing a homogeneous product under two licensing policies: fee and royalty. The final bargaining outcome in fee licensing is uniquely determined, because the NTU b...
متن کاملTechnology Licensing in a Differentiated Oligopoly
We show the effects of product differentiation and product market competition on technology licensing by an outside innovator. For a certain range of product differentiation, both the innovator and the society prefer royalty licensing compared to auction (or fixed-fee), irrespective of Cournot and Bertrand competition, if the number of potential licensees is sufficiently large. Hence, for such ...
